Wondering what your opinions of this roundabout layout and whether you think the new road layout is poorly designed and perhaps dangerous. It's the old Saxondale roundabout at the junction of the A52 and A46 in Nottingham.

If you're on the the A52 with intention of going straight over to take the old Bingham relief road (old A46 section) you have to take the right-hand lane when you enter the roundabout which puts you on the inside lane of the roundabout itself. There are 2 more entrances to the roundabout before you can take your exit (one from the new A46 island and one from the petrol station) which means traffic going to Bingham itself are put onto your inside lane which means you now have to cut across them on order to take your exit. The number of times I've encountered traffic attempting to undertake whilst I'm clearly indicating to exit is unbelievable.

Here's the location on Google maps bear in mind the satellite view is way out of date.

If i have your direction right. There are 3 lanes that enter the roundabout?

Small road with 30 signs. Then the A46 Newark (North), Then the A52 (East). Then the A46 which i presume is the one you want? Hardigate road?

To me i think you should be in the Middle lane.

3 lanes on the entrance and 3 on the roundabout.
Left lane small road, A46(N) and A52(E).
Middle Lane A52(E) (exit in right hand lane) and A46

The map is a mess though. Been through that way many times but usually on the A46.
    Signposted Cropwell Bishop/ Butler?

Or are you coming the other way?

I use it quite a bit visiting my brother, for your exit you need to be in the middle lane.
  • Without seeing the signage and roadmarking from all points of entry onto the roundabout there is no way of saying if there is a problem with either the design of it or the common useage (which may well be contrary to the instructions/ design)

So being on the right hand lane entering puts you on the inside lane on?

Is the second road off/on the old A52 section used much? It doesn't seem to really go anywhere now. So why not ignore it for all intents and purposes and then either use the inside or middle lane? If it is sign posted otherwise then that suggests they have made a mistake.

There's no middle lane to go straight on. On the A52 approaching the "old" Saxondale roundabout (the one nearest to Bingham) going towards Nottingham the only lane allowing you to go straight over is the right hand lane of the dual-carriageway that immediately puts you on the inside lane of the roundabout which cause you to have to cut across the path of any traffic to go straight on.

I think the poor design is where they've made the left lane of the A52 on the approach for left-hand turners only.

Yes, the second exit is solely for the petrol station I believe. As above, the only lane signed to allow you to go straight over onto the "old" A46 is the right-hand lane

It used to be badly designed when it was still in the building stages, but now it's fine. The only issues are people who ignore the current markings and try to do what they've done in the past - which from your descriptions seems to be what you're doing.

It doesn't seem at all thought out if you're trying to stay on the 52 in either direction.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

How am I ignoring the markings?

Taking into account this maps image is somewhat out of date

I've been forced into this position on the inside of the roundabout where I want to go straight over (and preferably want to be in the left lane) but I've now got two sets of traffic entering the entering the roundabout on my left (one from the new roundabout and one from the new petrol station exit)
