Medication in hand luggage

Both the medical profession and the CAA advise that medication should be carried in hand luggage in case it is lost. As Ryanair and others are insisting that some hand luggage is put in the hold can passengers with medication in their hand luggage insist that it is not put in the hold?

Have it in a separate small bag so it can easily be retrieved from larger bag to take on board

This is what I did last year, not on Ryanair but just in case anyway.
I also carried a letter from my GP stating that I needed to have my medication available to hand at all times.

I would mention it at check in/bag drop that you have medication in your hand luggage and would need it with you on the flight. Most will offer some sort of special dispensation in the situation by allowing those with genuine needs to have either part or all of their hand luggage with them on the flight.

If you want an official line from an airline, why not email them? You can go armed then

You are now permitted to take a second smaller bag which may be ideal for your medication. Only the large cabin bags are put into the hold....in required.

plus 1 small bag up to 35 x 20 x 20 cms may be carried per passenger

I and my OH are on a number of drugs each, so putting the whole fortnights holidays drugs in our hand luggage would be difficult. We normally put our fortnights supply in our cases and , say about 5 days worth in our handluggage, just in case the case goes missing, which in over 30 years of travelling has never happened.


You will need to keep them in the boxes they came in, not just a strip of each of them, if you carry them in your hand luggage and it would be good if you can get a copy of your repeat prescription to show you need them.


If you were insulin based diabetic, I would carry them in your hand luggage anyway as you don't know if they would get smashed in your case.


If they do go missing, if you are going on holiday in the |EU, you should be able to replenish them in chemists whilst you are away, or see a doctor to represcribe them for you whilst abroad. That's why you will need you prescription. I wouldn't worry though, the chances of your luggage going missing is very low
