I would go for worktop off if you have no mitres

However, if you go for a new dishwasher you may have an issue with the limited height

We're always going to have that issue! Looks like I have three choices:

Live with a broken dishwasher and unusable space (but not have the hassle and cost of removing the damn thing)
Take out the dishwasher and fit an extra cupboard (involves the hassle of moving but I won't have the risk of any new dishwasher breaking down and having to do the same again)
Remove and replace the dishwasher (potential for the same issue)

The engineer advised that all 12 place integrated dishwashers are the same size - is this not the case?

I believe they are all a "standard" size now but are they the same "standard" size as your one?!!

I just meant that you will have the same problem if the next one breaks down! Which you have realised. I personally would be looking for long term solution not a quick fix. It does seem strange that there is so little room. Kitchen cabinets are pretty much a standard size so the original fitter must have lowered the legs on them a fair way for you to be having issues.

You have mitred joints if 2 worktops join together with just a very minor seam. other joints are done with special jointing pieces,

We do have mitred joints then, b*gger.

Thanks for all your help everyone much appreciated. One last question, who would be the best person to advise on this (eg, the best solution for extracting the machine and reducing problems in the future)? Kitchen fitter perhaps?

Whereabouts are you based? Somebody maybe able to recommend a tradesman.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.
