Experian got my new card details from somewhere?

I took advantage of the 30 day trial period for experian around this time last year, I cancelled before the end of the trial but agreed to the £1.99 a month identity fraud e-mail alerts.
Then a month or so ago I lost my wallet as a result I cancelled my debit card that was used to pay the £1.99 a month, I'd actually forgot all about experian so when they e-mailed me a few days ago saying that if I didn't update my payment details then my account would be cancelled.

Great I thought, saves me phoning to cancel...then out of nowhere the payment goes through...they've somehow got my new card details, I didn't give them it, how is this possible anyone know?

    Hi,

I am sorry to hear that this happened to you, if you would like me to investigate what has happened in relation to your membership and the cancellation request, you can email me on Uksocialsupport@experian.com

    Further Information:

New Card Details are provided to us directly from VISA or MasterCard.

In the Terms and Conditions of your card provider, there should be a section that provides VISA or Mastercard with the permission to update companies with whom you hold a revolving credit agreement with.

CreditExpert is one of those companies which you hold a revolving credit agreement with. When you entered into your membership with us, you agreed to make a monthly payment as part of that membership.

If you wish to confirm this, you may wish to contact your card issuer directly.

    I hope this helps.

  • Went into my local bank branch they had no clue as to how this happened. All seems pretty shady to me, I might have willingly continued my membership had they not have went behind my back for the details....the payment wasn't even due yet. smh

It is (or at least was ~5 years ago) the rules of Visa and Mastercard that anyone doing reoccurring payments had to use the Card Updater service prior to doing a subsequent payment. There are three responses that the services can give back:

    1) Card OK use
    2) New Card number - number
    3) Dont use - Reason code

It was put in place to help people who wanted to keep services but forgot to update card number but mainly to allow people to more definitely cancel a Continuous Payment Authority with their bank. You'd tell them you;ve withdrawn the authority and so Tesco's or whoever it is would get a Code 3 return and a short code to give the reason why - so in this case it would be CPA withdrawn.

Its not surprising branch staff dont know about it, most will argue that you cannot even cancel a CPA with them. Speak to their business section, mainly merchant services, and knowledge will be a bit higher.

When I was involved in putting it in place for an insurer very few people had bothered complying with the rules despite the deadline looming. Not even all of the merchant service providers had even set it up yet for the end merchants to be able to use it if they wanted to.

Havent been involved in it since so dont know how it moved on. There are plenty of merchants that ignore Visa and Mastercard rules though but are big enough to have bargaining power to do so.
