My gran is in her 90s and has very thin skin which tears easily. The one thing that helps is Doublebase gel. She was using E45 (but didn't find it that great and it could sting). I had doublebase at home due to my sons eczema and told her to try it instead. She's found her skin has really improved. You can get it from a pharmacy in great big tubs (with a pump) or also in smaller tubes. Might be worth a go.

My son no longer gets eczema (Yippee!) but I find its such great stuff I always have it at home now.

Fab, my Mum has just been prescribed that for her dry skin so can easily share it! Had been given some Dermol a couple of days ago so to soon to tell if it's helping but I could us

I would second the double base stuff, they use it to protect against pressure sores etc so you should find that soothing.

Please avoid stuff like cetraban. It will thin the skin over time. I would also suggest you try and stick with natural products and avoid too many chemicals, such as parabens or sodium laurel sulphate (SLS)

The best and cheapest natural products are either pure coconut oil or olive or grape seed oil. Oils are a bit messier than creams so you need to let them soak in before dressing, however dry parched skin will really benefit from using oil.

I would also suggest adding oils to your diet, add olive oil to food, eats oily fish a couple of times a week. I would also suggest taking Evening Primrose Oil or Starflower oil as a daily supplement. You need to strengthen your skin from the inside as well as well as just treating the outside surface.

If skin is really delicate try to avoid clothing which chafes or rubs the skin and try to protect it from injury. Pure cotton or better still bamboo is much kinder to the skin than synthetic fabrics.

Hope you get it sorted and I agree don't punish yourself. we all have health issues from time to time.
  • So are you saying NOT to use the Demol which was given to me by the nurse at my gps as she was changing the dressing on my latest F-up? Now you see why I'm confused?
