thanks alot all of you! An odd thing happened today. I was again making dummy quotes but this time in a friend's place, and the quotes came out even cheaper?!?!?! It's now £730 for a Corsa, £770 for a Yaris and £830 for a Jazz, all on a £350 excess! Really odd isn't it?
Have a few more questions:
1.) Can anyone tell me how much could I realistically knock off a £4500-£5000 window price car?
2.) Is it worth paying that bit extra for a manufacturer approved used car? I've seen a few Yaris-es which are Toyota Approved, but these seem to be £300-£500 more than their non approved counterparts?
3.) Is it worth paying £140 odd for an AA used car check, as I know almost nothing about cars?
I always knock money off the asking price and if it were me would go in at £4000.00 cash if not cheaper, I got a motor for my missus that was up for £3750.00 and got them down to £3000.00 cash at a garage.
If buying from a main dealer and at around the money you are looking to pay they should all come with a guarantee of sorts if not push for one and see what they offer, And I only check a car for HP and the likes if buying from an individual.0 -

However, it is well worth being aware that dealers will not do that sort of deal routinely. Generally speaking at a dealer 10% off the screen price of a used car will be doing well.
It's also worth knowing that cash really is not king for car dealers any more. They're far more interested in signing you up to a finance deal, which will generate them a decent chunk of revenue; for cash, they'll probably pay to bank it, and there's no kick-back from the finance house.0 -

thank you! Mind me asking what a main dealer is? Are they like JCT600 and Evans Halshaw and the like? Sorry! I know nothing much about cars.0 -

A manufacturer franchised dealer; one that sells that manufacturer's new and approved used cars will be a main dealer.
A dealer which trades as an 'independent' will sell only used cars (unless they're bringing in something unusual on a small time basis) and therefore won't have the same warranties available/aftercare/etc.0 -
So would I not require an AA mechanic to have an inspection for a manufacturer approved car? Also, I saw a Toyota dealership offering a Honda Jazz "manufacturer approved". That can't be right, can it? TIA!0

Have you considered a Mini? An older <06 plate would fall into your price bracket and they are pretty bombproof (bear in mind the power steering pump issue) but aside from that, there are millions of all ages on the road but never at the side of the road! They give a fabulous driving experience!0

That Corsa looks pricey.
Use this as a bargaining tool.

Though in all.honesty i would just up the budget.
No contest for me between a 57plate car and a 61plate car with 19k.
Or even a 12 plate

Similar prices will be available at any car supermarket. Such as Motorpoint or Fords of Winsford.
Not sure how good the Easytronic box is they used to be a bit jerky like the similar box in Citreons (an automated single clutch manual)
Though the 12 plate is still under manufacturers warranty for a year or so.
On a small automatic with low miles in decent condition you will be lucky to get anything off.
They are retail gold and the dealer is likely to have not much more than 15/20% margin in the car.
Decent stock is fetching more than CAP clean by some margin for the last 6months to a year minimum.0 -

I would avoid the Jazz in auto it has a horrible CVT box.
In manual they are spot on but no good for OP sadly.0 -
thank you all! I have thought about it and will probably go with a manufacturer approved Toyota Yaris, these come with 12 month warranty so perhaps abit of peace of mind?!0

found a car that I like...

This 58 Reg Yaris with pretty low mileage. Before I make an overpriced train trip up, can I just ask the experienced members here- the dealer selling the car is RMC Toyota Northallerton, I assume this is what you call a "main dealer"? Will I need to hire an AA/RAC mechanic to have a look over the car or will it be fine cos its from a main dealer?
Also, will the car come with any form of warranty? If I were keen on (paid) warranty, how much will that cost me, and is the price negotiable?
If the car happens to breakdown, will I have to drive it all the way to Northallerton rather than to the nearest Toyota garage where I live in Leeds?
TIA!!0
