Switching in last few weeks of fixed contract tariff

Our energy tariff is set to expire at the end of September, and I've since received some emails from Uswitch advising of other tariffs to move on to.

Something quoted on the email and their website is that a cancellation fee wouldn't be charged, as 'you are in the last few weeks of your energy tariff you can switch now without worrying about a penalty'. Is this actually true?

This isn't highlighted anywhere in M&S' (our current provide) T&Cs - and was wondering if anyone has actually switched at a similar time?

Thanks :)

    See para one:

And for the avoidance of any further doubt:

In accordance with new Ofgem regulations, suppliers must send you notice about your plan's upcoming end date 42 - 49 days before the end of your plan so that you have time to make a decision about switching — regardless if the plan carries exit fees (cancellation fees).

While this seems like plenty of time, you don't want to leave it to the last minute — if you decide to switch suppliers, switch times can take 4-6 weeks.

    Thanks Hengus.

Should be expecting a letter any day now then. Seems doubtful that any significantly cheaper tariffs will come up in the next few weeks, so I certainly don't intend to leave it til the last minute.
