I think CCTV would be a really bad idea.
What I would suggest is (i) get insurance (ii) password protect your laptop and back up your data regularly (iii) keep your door locked when you are not in the room.
If you are in a hall which is arranged with separate 'flats' and if the door f your room doesn't have a separate lock, or if you are sharing a room, then a safe is a good idea, or even just making a habit of keeping your laptop out of sight, where someone casually popping in to see what is available won;t be able to immediately see it.
A lot of thefts happen because someone gets in through the front door, and everyone assumes that they live in the hall or are a friend of someone who does, so they are not challenged. Starting to search a room, or trying to break in to a locked room s much more conspicuous and it is likely to be easier for them to move on to the next room.
Obvious security marking such as having your name/postcode engraved conspicuously is also off putting as it makes your stuff harder to sell. All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
Installing CCTV in your room sounds a bit weird to me, plus even if you did use it to detect a theft, your laptop would be gone and you'd be no better off in the short term - you may eventually catch the thief but that won't help you complete your studies in the interim.
If you are worried about things like laptops being stolen then invest in a laptop security cable and use it! Ok, it won't stop the determined pilferer but it will normally do the job of persuading anyone that the next room may have easier pickings.
SPCome on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.0
