new tax credit claim

Can anyone help? Seperated from partner 8/8, we didn't have a tax credit claim, but have called for form to apply. The lady says the form will take 2 weeks, and then only once it's received back will the entitlement be dated from? Is that right, I'll only be entitled from around e.g. 26/8 even those circumstances are so from 8/8. I thought it would get backdated to 8/8, coinciding with the reduced income from now ex. How can I pay bills if will be around 3 weeks down on money
