Rim locks/Internal door mechanisms

Apologies if I use incorrect terminology in this thread....

I am looking to replace the door mechanism on an internal door which wasn't working. Its what I think is called a rim lock (i.e. mounted onto the door rather than the mechanism being contained 'within' the door).

What am I best doing - replacing like for like, or attempting to fit a new, more modern mechanism (if this is even possible)?

Its for a room that I don't want the occupant to be able to lock - from basic research, that doesn't seem to be possible with rim locks (I guess the clue is in the name...) in which case it would have to be key-lockable so that I just wouldn't give them access to the key.

If a rim lock is the best way to go, can anyone recommend a supplier? I'm not loving the few I've found so far.

By the way, to remove it, I had to cut through the axle (? - the bit joining the two handles) - do I have to buy this separately?

Sorry for my ignorance, finding this quite hard to google without knowing the correct terminology! Thanks for the help!

Juding by the mention of a handle on either side, you seem to be meaning the old-fashioned rim latch, rather than a Yale-style rim latch?

In which case, I'm sure you should be able to find one that doesn't come with a key, just with the shaft that joins the handles, so it is merely a latch, rather than a lock.

It may not fit exactly, and may necessitate you moving the keep, for example, but that shouldn't be too hard.
