scottish power taken money after dd was cancelled

sorry it's a bit long winded but basically was persuaded in dec 2013 to change from edf to scottish power but on further study decided t wasn't a good deal so cancelled with scottish power within the cooling off period. SP ignored the cancellation I tried to ring them and after waiting to be connected for close to an hour was cut off during the transfer to cancellations. Eventually spoke to someone who promised to sort it but was informed by edf that sp wouldn't transfer me back. ended up contacting ombudsman and cancelled my dd with my bank in branch.
Upshot is sp were supposed to be sorting it out, i received a small amount of compensation for trouble and could pay them an amount could afford as after all this time i presume i owe a substantial amount.( i have saved some towards this but not sure it will cover whole amount).
i checked bank statement last week and sp have taken some money. i asked a customer service agent a bank who said i should have cancelled with sp. surely the cancelling of my contract should also cover dd. she said i need to contact sp not the bank. i've looked on internet and i believe from info that she is wrong and the bank should refund the money. is this the case and if so how do i go about it? i have contacted sp via email as it's a nightmare on the phone and the ombudsman but so far heard nothing. i'm worried that i the meantime sp could take all my money and leave me unable to pay other bills.
who said t was easy to switch?

Ask your bank to raise an indemnity claim as the cancellation instruction was not processed by Scottish Power.DEBT FREE!
Debt free by Xmas 2014: £3555.67/£4805.67 (73.99%)
Debt free by Xmas 2015: £1250/£1250 (100.00%)0 -
If you cancelled the DD with your bank then SP must have setup another DD to take the funds, so you can claim the money back from your bank who will then take it back from SP, you can then argue with SP about the amount owed.0

If you did cancel in branch. then the DD guarantee applies, as the bank are aware that the mandate has been cancelled. A said above, get back onto them. If necessary use the bank's formal complaints procedure.0
