Someone somewhere in the organisation or their system provider however would know which check is failing.

If its AVS they wont know which digit is wrong as the bank does that bit but they'd be able to say definitively its AVS rather than CRA ID Check etc.

Is it possible that when I am issued with a new debit card, the problem might disappear or am I being naive ?

I'd guess very unlikely but without knowing root cause its only ever going to be a wet finger in the air

Oh well, thanks for all the advice, I will have to have a think about what to do next. I am away for a good few weeks visiting a relative so will have to deal with it on my return.
