No Sound ? Anyone Help

I cant get my ear phones to work when i try to play my cds through windows media player or for that any player . I have them in the phone socket on the processor and i have checked all the volume sliders etc / none are muted but still cant get any sound through the phones ? anyone help please ?

On my computer with speakers, I use the socket on the front of the speaker.
On my other computer which has speakers built into the screen there is a socket underneath the screen.
