Tax credits stopped

Hi there
I renewed my tax credits and have now been told that all is going to end on the 31st August. Also they are stopping Child Benefit also.

My daughter has just turned 19 in May and is doing levels 4/5 in child care & development she has already completed levels 1,2 & 3 and this was the next step also A level Maths & English then next year she can go to university. These courses are all being done at the same college she has attended since being 16.

Their reasons being that they are now classing my daughter as being in higher education and i only work 16 hours a week so i will not qualify for any as i need to be working 30 hours.

I've looked at the 30 hours a week for myself but as i am partially disabled i think i would struggle to commit to 30 hours.
My daughter is now considering leaving education to find a full time job but i don't want her to have to do this. I have worked so hard to get her to this stage where she could go to university and make something of her life

I relied on the tax credits payment every month to pay our rent etc and i honestly do not know what to do now. As i know my wage will not cover things.
I've never claimed any benefits apart from the tax credits so wouldn't no where to start.
Any advice out there :)

  • I could be wrong (and I'm afraid your post is a bit confusing) but it might be the levels 4 & 5 in childcare that look like higher education.

I am not sure from your post.., is she doing levels 4 & 5 Childcare / A levels from September 2014 and going to Uni September 2015 or is she going to Uni September 2014? Obviously, once she goes to uni she will be in advance education and benefits for her will stop as she will be able to claim student loans etc and be deemed as being able to look after herself.

Are you receiving housing benefit? Is it that your rent is needing top up? If not, perhaps you could look at applying.

If your daughter is going to Uni, and will be living on campus etc, perhaps you could move to a smaller place. If she is going to continue living at home, perhaps its only fair to ask for a contribution.

have a look on here to make sure you are claiming everything you can

When I got made redundant 2 years ago it showed that we could claim council tax benefit which the job centre did not tell me about.

    Hi
Yes she doing levels 4 & 5 Childcare / A levels from September 2014 and going to Uni September 2015 and like i said the level 4/5 is just continued on from the previous levels 1,2 & 3she has already done. As these are just being done at the local college and not at a university i cannot understand why they can be classed as higher education. Obviously when she does get to uni she will then be able to claim the student loans etc but as it is now where she is at a college she cannot do this nor do they pay any sort of bursary.
I will have to look into the housing benefit etc as i would presume i would be able to claim these but even with this i don't think we would manage just on my wages.
  • And unfortunately in May 2014, the child tax credits and child benefit will stop anyway because she will turn 20. Even if she dropped the levels 4 & 5 Child care study.

It varies from college to college, but my son's college helps with him travel expenses, books and other costs. I also don't have to pay fees. I beleive next year the amounts may drop a bit as once they turn 19, the reimbursement is only partial. But as I say, that's only my college.

BUT when I was at college and Uni, I worked. I gained a lot more than money out of it, in fact one of the jobs I did then helped me get my first career type job out of uni. Your daughter can do two or three evenings a week and still study. Many do.

But please investigate if you could get any more help with benefits. Pride won't stop you getting evicted if you can't pay the rent. Pride won't feed you either, or keep you healthy.
