Has anyone had any experience in using outdoor wireless kit and willing to pass on any recommendations?

Depends on what you mean by outdoor.
There's completely outdoor or there's using a wifi router in the house with an antenna on the outside of the house.

If you do a search you will find that a linksys router can be sealed inside a waterproofed tupperware style cake box, with power supplied via a POE connection. Linksys was favoured because of its reliability over long periods without having to reboot the device.0
