New Electronic Tax disc

On October the 1st the new electronic tax disc will enter into our life.
There are plenty of info on what will happen if you don't register and pay.
However, looking on the DVLA web site I can't find anything about the registration per se.
Is it possible to register right now?
Should existing car holder register on October the 1st sharp?
Will the registration happen automatically?
But most importantly, what will happen to the existing tax disc fee? Will they return the money back and collect a new fee from the 1st?

From reading this https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-tax-changes
my understanding is that the ability to pay by DD will be a choice rather than a mandatory way to pay and that the scheme will be rolled out as tax becomes due for renewal. You will still get the tax reminders

How much of my money went into making that?
I'm quite impressed that the man in the video has been running around untaxed since September 2010 thoughI want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

How will the new system work for those of us with a car with a £nil VED rate? Mine's due on 1st of October so just wondering really... I guess I'll just need to register anyway and pay nothing :rotfl:Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0

Mine is due on 1st October, I was just going to wait to see what the reminder said.0

Mine runs out in January next year - but the disc will go in the bin on the 1st of October.
I'll get improved visibility then - can't wait.
That video was total and utter rubbish - a complete stupid waste of money.
Are they going to show this on TV nearer the date?0 -
The video! Hadn't bothered looking at that before - wish I hadn't wasted that minute and a half now. Could barely understand a word he said, especially at the start (and I'm from the North)
MoneyMate, not certain what your question is but from my point of view and the cars I manage for work, nothing will change other than:
- From 1 October, you can rip up any/all tax discs you have
- From 1 November, when your tax reminder comes through you can choose to pay by direct debit if you wish instead of credit/debit card. You can if paying by DD also choose to pay monthly (for a premium)
- You will no longer have to apply for a tax disc refund - these will be issued automatically when the V5C is sent to DVLA to register a sale/scrappage or a sorn is declared
And finally, there is nothing to "register" for until you get the tax reminder0 -
I can't believe that youtube video. Absolutely shocking!
If he told me in August that he'd be getting rid of me in October I'd be making my own way out before then.
Is that disc really going to stand by him for the next two months after being treated like that?0
