On-peak and off-peak electricity meters

Hi all,
I have a question regarding my electricity meters. We have two in our flat, with one being on-peak and another one off-peak according to the bills we have received. However I am not sure if that's correct - the "on-peak" meter spins all the time - never saw it standing, even as late as 2 am. The "off-peak" one on the other hand almost always standing, even at 2 am. Recently I saw it spinning around 11 pm - the "on-peak" one was spinning at the same time. Is this behaviour normal? I assumed that one would simply spin during on-peak times and stop during off-peak and another one vice-versa. I asked my electricity provider's customer service and they couldn't answer me.

  • The off peak meter should get approx 7 hours. The switching of the meters is controlled by timer switches,e.g. radio teleswitch ( very accurate ),- built in to the digital meter, (also fairly accurate ), or an old 24 hour circular timerswitch ( very inaccurate ). With the last one the cheap rate could be anywhere in the 24 hours. They should never overlap and run together

That is not correct, a lot of off peak meter run just the under floor heating and immersion often for more hours than 7hrs with 16hrs not being unusual. Typically the off peak will have an overnight then a boost in the afternoon for around 3hrs.

The on peak meter will always run even during these times for everything but the heating/water heating.

It sounds like you don't have an EC7 meter but some form of legacy tariff. What is the name of the tariff on your bill?

I'd recommend asking your supplier what meter you have.
  • Hi,

the off peak will be for heating and possibly hot water and will be on a timer.

There used to be an old tariff, OP 'C', which was for heating.

The on peak, will be for normal usage, lights, telly, cooker, fridge/freezer etc.

As asked in previous post, what tariff are you on?
