EDF energy transposed electricity meter readings for 3 years
Options
Am after some advice please or maybe just a sanity check - 4 years ago I was told by Eon that my electricity meter needing changing, at that time I was with EDF energy. New electricity meter was installed, with dual rates 1 or N and 4 or L, both obviously starting from zero.
After a couple of weeks I took an initial meter reading, then looking at my historic bills EDF took their own subsequent readings twice over a period of 6 months (A for actual on my bills) - at this point my night usage was showing 3 times my day usage which was normal looking at my previous 6 months consumption. Sometime after this I switched to Scottish Power then switched back to EDF in 2012 (don't have any records from Scottish Power to hand)
Upon switching back again EDF took their own meter readings for the Day/Night electricity usage then took another subsequent set of readings 5 months later. This still showed that my Night usage was approx. 3 times my day usage. To the end of my contract with them approx. 12 months after this last reading I was supplying my own meter readings myself maybe foolishly following on from their readings.
In May this year I switched to Npower, I had cause to contact them today regards a query on my electricity bill regards Economy 7 times and slowly the truth dawned on me that EDF had been transposing my Day and Night readings and infact for the past 4 years when I should have been paying more expensive day rates I was paying cheaper night rates - unless I am reading my meter incorrectly?
At the moment it is showing usage on the Normal or 1 rate which EDF has been reporting as the Night Rate since 2010? Where does this leave me, do I go back to Npower now and tell them I cant read a meter correctly, will EDF now get hold of this and want their cut for the past 4 years, do I ask Npower to come out and read my meter to see if they get the same readings as EDF, help

If thats the case they will nearly always log rate 1 as the night rate. You will then be billed all your expensive day rate units on the cheap rate and night rate on the expensive rate. If, as many have, you have got rid of your night storage heaters you are going to get a much reduced bill. In the past on this forum ,others have reported the suppliers dropping all claims for back billing because its wholly their fault. Either tell EDF and get the billing reversed back or sit back for as long as possible and fight your corner when they do eventually get some sense and bill you correctly
Ive actually switched suppliers from EDF to Npower 3 months ago the reading error wasnt flagged by them upon settlement of final bill0 -

I will advise people in the same position , if they want to avoid a back bill claim, to do a switch. So did Npower carry on in the same reversed reads. I think they are better as they understand electric meters better than most suppliers. I used to work for them and they trained us properly in 2 raters. Unlike G4S who havent done any training whatsoever and just leave it up to their meter readers to pick which rate they think is correct
I have been submitting my own meter readings so far so Npower havent sussed anythings wrong as yet may have to switch again0 -

Just make sure you've got some money set aside, if the day comes that edf/npower find out you'll have to pay for what you've used just like everybody else.0
