I have 3 cables, apart from the original. One was a £2 from ebay and that overheats. The other two I bought from the pound shop and they work fine with both the iPad and the iPhone.

We are talking about the cables here not the charger, a cable is just a set of wires with a plug at each end.Fiver......HERE

Cool, my poundshop cheapy has vanished and I couldn't find another, it worked fine with the real charger too.0 -
Ah hang on, that's for the 30 pin cable not a lightning cable.0

A Lightning cable isnt just a plug at each end, it has microchips which allegedly enable the reversibility of plugging it in - though why they are in the cable and not the port I dont know.
Its how iPhones etc can detect if its a licensed cable being used or not but for now you just get a warning message.
Given the power has already been transformed by the charger however I would consider it to be any more of a fire risk than using the same charger with a genuine cable.0 -
There are only so many ways you can wire a 2.1amp 5v DC supply to charge a battery or transfer data, Apple are at it.0

Exactly, hence why its necessary to have some extra bits to deal with being able to invert the plug.
That all said and done, USB has 4 pins? Never understood how that then goes to a 30 pin connector in a meaningful way. Not that I've ever given it much thought either.0 -
Personally I've never had issues with 3rd party cables -> of course I'll always look for one in the £3-£7 from a vaguely reputable supplier as £1 are usually terrible quality and just too cheap to make a decent one for the price.
but I find paying over the odds for cables one way to avoid leaking ££s unnecessarily0 -
If you do get a cheap one I wouldn't ever leave it unattended (ie don't leave anything charging when you go out or go to bed).
There are some horror stories of cheap knock-offs starting fires (as already mentioned).0
