Daughters bank account defrauded

Hi there, my daughter had her wages took from her bank account 3 weeks ago..

The branch told her someone had lifted it out with a passport & card, the bank returned the money.

We contacted the banks fraud dept, and they have really done nothing and are now happy that the situation has been resolved.

We really do not know what has happened and have been told different conflicting stories now.

She really only wants to find out if the money was stolen or the banks mistake, but the branch and the fraud dept are now not giving any more information, and have decided the matter closed.

Should I contact the police, Regards

No need to contact the Police if she was refunded. The bank will do this if they need to.
  • The bank will not tell you or anybody else how the fraud was undertaken.
It is their loss so that is the end of it unless they found somebody was complicit in doing it.

How do you think the passport and card was taken from your daughter and then put back without her knowing?

I had card and PIN taken one night in a minicab (embarrassing story). A few hundred taken before their fraud office contacted me. I rang them, telling the story, happy to pay for my mistake. But they didn't care in the least and refunded the money.
  • It could only have been taken in her work, but it would not have been her passport but her driving licence..

But the manager said his experienced teller served it over to someone with her passport, but we believe it was her licence.

She only wants to know if there is a thief in her work, but we are just being passed from pillar to post.

And just wanting to know if it is worth contacting the police if fraud has been commited, Regards

The Police won't want to know as your daughter hasn't suffered any loss. If she thinks her driving licence was stolen then she should report that.

if she thinks there might be a thief at her place of work, she needs to tell her manager, or, if she doesn't trust the manager, Personnel. It might also still be worth her telling the Police as they might have reports from other people and it might help them piece together a major case of theft.

Many years ago, I worked in a large open plan office block near a major UK airport. As we learnt much later, people had money and cards disappearing out of jackets hung on the back of chairs, out of handbags, out of unlocked briefcases, out of departmental jam jars sitting on secretaries' desks etc. I was not affected personally, probably more by sheer luck than by expecting a thief to operate in our offices and keeping my money/cards really safe all the time.

Nobody was talking about the missing money/cards to anyone else as nobody trusted their colleagues enough to mention it. A few of the victims went to the Police, who eventually managed to catch the thief. He wasn't an employee, but a complete stranger who had made it his business to fly in from another UK airport once a week, passing security (at several companies around the airport) with forged badges, and emptying peoples' bags and pockets whilst they left them unattended, then flying out again. The total loot amounted to several tens of thousands of pounds before the guy was caught. Nobody, as far as we know, ever got their money back as the guy was apparently completely broke. But at least he ended up in prison, and no further thefts took place.
