Surely if D&G were auto renewing the policy and sending documents every 12 months or whatever they would be checking a database to see whether parts are still available for the appliance in question.

D&G told the OP that parts were not available when they attempted to claim so why couldn't they check this when they were renewing the policy?

I'm pretty sure this doesn't happen. They can't check every appliance thats covered by them.

Looks as though the most they might get is vouchers towards a new appliance as they won't be able to repair it. Does the fire need the coals to work ?
  • It was set up for automatic renewal.
  • It does work without the coals, its just cosmetic but still covered by the insurance.

I used to work in a call centre that occasionally handled some of their work. And if I remember rightly, policy is that they will not replace fully unless it is not functioning AND the parts department confirm that replacement parts are obsolete. If it's a part that the appliance can safely function without, then they will not replace the whole thing.

Thanks so much to all who post :)
  • You could argue that without the coals the fire does not burn efficiently, possibly to the point where it could be dangerous.

The coals actually serve a purpose, they store and radiate heat to some degree and they're not just cosmetic.
