But the OP could claim from RM using the original Ebay transaction as evidence of the value couldn't they and let the Paypal payment stand?

Without knowing the item and whether it is covered we have no guarantee to say that RM will definitely pay out - or that they will pay out in full.

Royal Mail Compensation - For stamped items a postage refund plus compensation on the basis of actual loss, where evidence of posting and evidence of value can be provided. This compensation is subject to the maximum payable being the lower of the market value of the item and the maximum of £20.00.

If the trader is honest and the OP returns with requested info to identify, the OP should receive a refund? The OP can still complain to Royal Mail and get a book of stamps, the going rate for a basic complaint. Royal Mail should be grateful that you have identified an area where Royal Mail/Post office staff need training.

There is no compensation on Freepost.

RETURNS- Sellers providing a freepost return address
:undecidedA question for soolin - Ebay Board or any Enigma code breakers from Royal Mail.
If the recorded freepost item gets lost in the post, who pays compensation. All existing ebay members have just received updates to terms & conditions from September 15 2014 - all sellers to pay for returns. I for one will not be buying from any freepost sellers in the future until I get assurance. I would have thought that a company like ebay would be able to get a definitive answer from Royal Mail, I've just been checking this forum and this recorded freepost issue has been around since 2012 and remains an Enigma.

:DI'm not wishing mgdavid the OP bad luck, but maybe we need a test case, a lost return to a freepost address to get a ruling from Royal Mail/ebay

or kick the :footie: round for another couple of years

Sorry but can you clarify what you mean? Why would you not buy from sellers offering freepost? If you do not receive it then you get your money back from the seller....(enforced by ebay/paypal buyer protection).

If it is returns that you are talking about then the returns are not 'Freepost' as the seller pays for it and a claim can be made should it go missing...in fact there is a bit on ebays help pages that covers that event and it looks like ebay compensate the buyer and the seller doesn't have to refund.
