Next Credit Account

Options
More of a warning. My wife often buys from Next, we both hate the fact that online you have to buy on a credit account. We thought we got around this by ringing them up instead. They assured us this way you could pay for it upfront.

Despite telling us the item was paid for up front, we were surprised that after checking the next credit account statement the items in fact has been added to the credit account and they had charged us interest.

They tried to justify it by saying the items must have been delayed therefore "we do not charge until they are dispatched and then when dispatched the charge goes on the credit account" (we don't believe that they were delayed).

At the time of buying it was made absolutely clear that we did not want to buy on the credit account, and my wife was assured that it would not be.

Just something to consider before buying from next online or over the phone.

I entered a simple competition to win a car that I entered into in one of their stores, and ended up with a credit account.

Dodgy practices! They've been like this for ages. The only way to combat it is to avoid buying with Next Online.
  • I agree, I wont be buying from them again at all. Getting the wife not to shop their though will be more difficult. :-)

How can you get interest on the items if they were on the next statement?
Surely credit accounts work on the basis that they send you a statement and you have a choice of paying it off or paying a set amount and carrying the balance forward.

I find it very unlikely that on the first statement you received after the items had been ordered that you would have been charged interest.

The credit account was not checked for a couple of months, so yes as a credit account it worked exactly as it should. Ok our fault for not checking in the first month, but when you pay for something upfront (or a least think you are) you do not really expect to have anything to pay off. My issue is not that they charge interest, it is more that they charged our purchase to the credit account in the first place.

How did you pay upfront, if the item was already paid for they should not of charged you again, if they charged you twice then they should refund the costs and any interest generated.

Gave card details over the phone. They never did charge us twice it is just rather than charge via the agreed method of payment they instead charged the Next Credit Account.

We specifically rang up because when you buy online with next you have no choice on how you pay (credit account or nothing). They assured on the phone that we could pay using our own credit card (and took the details).

I am not demanding Next pay the interest back or anything like that as we should of noticed earlier. However I do take issue with the fact the credit account was charged in the first place.

I would be demanding the interest be repaid. After all they breached the contract. (Verbal agreements form part of the terms of contract, albeit they can be more difficult to prove).
  • Didn't you notice the funds hadn't debited your credit card account either?

If it was my account I would of pushed it further, it was actually my wife's account. I doubt we will shop their again though.
