Having a discusion on another thread i discovered even though i can cook a multitude of things with a wide variety of ingredients, i can follow a recipe to a 'T' and also make my own gorgeous concoctions.
I can NOT however make 'propper' chips or boil a runny egg to perfection!
Come on own up you whizzes in the kitchen must have something that turns out wrong every time :rotfl:
If not just make it up to make me feel better

you need to get down to lakeland and buy one of their colour changing boiled egg timers, they are fab - my eggs now turn out perfect every time

Another one who cannot make yorkshire pudding, and my pastry comes out like biscuits, will keep trying though0

I can't make large portions of rice... I was trying ot impress OH's college friends once and made paella. I knew I shouldn't have.. the rice was rock-hard; I had to microwave it in the end. Other than that (as a former chef) I can cook pretty much anything.
(edit - spelling mistakes!)0 -
runny eggs are either hard or 'snotty' and i can never judge portion sizes of rice or spagetti. i always end up with enough to feed an army or not enough to feed an hamster!!
i make fine pastry though- prior planning prevents poor performance!

PANCAKES!
When I was 15 I worked in a cafe, and we used to make our own scones and pancakes. I was great at it, pancakes were perfect every time.
Now a few years later I can not make pancakes to save myself! Not even with my Mothers recipe (she is a chef, dedicated to easy but tasty food) They run, they burn, they are yuck.
I even tried that JML pancake pan thing.
I give up, pancakes beat me.0 -

However, I used to be rubbish at pastry, bread, pancakes and gravy. But over the years and with the help of many cookery books I've cracked them all. Practice makes perfect, don't give up
I'm trying to think, tooStarted off not being able to do Yorkshires but I've cracked them now. My omelettes used to stick, and scones not rise, but as DS says I now have *The Magic of Scones*
I think that the things I can't do, I don't try any more, and concentrate on what gives me satisfaction

I'm a bit of a "bung it all in and hope for the best" cook so I'm pretty much sorted with most things.....I can do yorkies, roast potatoes are crispy, my pastry is melt in the mouth......But I can not do sponge cakes - they're always flat, lop sided, slightly burnt, the consistance of fudge and look horrible........good job we don't eat them very often!
I'm another one that has problems with quantity when it comes to rice and pasta too - we always end up with too much."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -
I am so ashamed of what I served up for tea tonight.
Gammon, grilled tomato and mushrooms, chips all fine. OH likes fried egg on his gammon not pineapple - oh the humanity!
The egg was like I had grated it while frying, what a mess. Bits of white all over the pan and the hob.
OH was not impressed - he even said "I did not like tea tonight". Can't blame him, what a poor effort.0 -

I'll trade you - yorkies no probs..... toad in the hole? sticks, fails to rise... you name it.
I have started to make yorkies with cocktail causages in as individual toads.... it is the only way for me0 -
