I'd say £50 ish. The thermostat valve itself is £15 in eBay, the housing is another £15 (doesn't have to be replaced, but sometimes they prefer to).
Plus coolant plus time to drain, fit, bleed. test. Call it an hour all-in, so - depending on where the OP - that might be £50+vat easily just for the labour.

Well mine cost £64, with the housing..... Its a swine on my car and as it was in for cambelt+water pump I had it done too.

Most garages price all jobs separately, £64 was what they charge regardless of other work.

Given that replacing the pump meant they already had the cooling system drained, so were refilling/bleeding/testing it anyway, plus new coolant...

Guys guys...this is assuming that the thermostats has failed...OP, can you carry out some basic maintenance first before worrying out specific works

  • I think there's one question here which we need answered before we go too much further.

WHY on earth are you wanting the car to blow hot air in August?

It was being testing on one of the rainy days... so was using it, but tested it at the same time.

Oh dear, oh very dear..... Doesn't sound like OP should really be in charge if a motor vehicle.

Are you kidding me? That is why there are mechanics.

I can kind of understand where Strider is coming from. I think any driver should be capable of doing basic checks such as oil and coolant levels, tyre tread & pressure etc. You'll always get a range of DIY enthusiasts, from those that will do minor jobs to those who will happily rebuild a gearbox in an evening. Not everyone has an interest in mechanical things, and are happy to let a professional "look after" their car - which is perfectly fine. But I really do think everyone should be able to do the very basic "weekly" checks. We've all heard the stories about the folk who only realised their tyres were well below the legal / safe tread level because the MOT picked it up.

...then argue that they were only a little bit illegal...

The thing is you need someone to teach you these skills and if you don't have that then you will never know. Most women wouldn't have a clue and neither would a hefty proportion of men.

It would only take a couple of lessons in school in say the 6th year to get enough information across to make a difference.
