Right graphics card for motherboard?

A friend has just bought a new widescreen monitor and it doesn't work with her graphics card (the resolution is wrong).

Her motherboard is Asus K8V-MX, 2 gig AMD Athlon 64 processor, onboard graphics VIA/s3G UniChromell

I found the manual for the motherboard online and it says it will only take 1.5V AGP cards, not 3.3V.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

You will find she may just need to load the monitor profile in to the PC so the PC knows what resolutions it can output.

We did all the installation, drivers etc. and the recommended resolution isn't supported on her PC. I think I've found the information I was looking for now, it needs an AGP 8x card, she doesn't need the latest so I recommended a 128mb Radeon which will do the job well enough for a reasonable price (currently watching one on ebay for about a tenner)

Thanks for trying to help, it's appreciated!

There could be a couple of reasons for this:

    1. The integrated drivers need updating, &/or (download from here)

    2. The motherboard BIOS needs updating (do the above first, & consider not doing this at all because if something goes wrong you'll need a new motherboard)

Both the above are free. Or, you can get a cheap dedicated AGP graphics card off eBay which should do the job (latest drivers may need to be installed). G

Edit: Oops, you've tried the drivers - were they the ones I posted above?

We'll try those drivers too before spending any money :D

I'm pretty sure the onboard graphics are way too poor for the monitor - I have the same monitor and I recall having to check it would work with my card before ordering - anyway a basic AGP card won't be expensive and it's easy to fit one of those!

    Thanks!

Its nothing to do with the graphics card or graphics card drivers.

the monitor profile is a a list of modes the monitor supports, install the correct profile and it will set the display resolution slider to only display the resolutions that the monitor supports, so a widescreen monitor will have the resolutions so the display doesnt look streched it looks as it should. as default PC's use a plug and play monitor setting if it has an idea of the monitor if it doesnt thenit gets Default monitor. use the advanced button with in the settings tab of display properties.

set your monitor to 1024x768 and the maximum option in display settings you will get is 1024x768 have a widescreen and if the monitor goes that high it will have up to 1680x1050
