Who should claim Carers Allowance ??

My Dad claims AA for himself he has a small private pension. His care needs are increasing as he now has Parkinsons on top of everything else. He lives alone. I am on ESA income related, my sister claims JSA and child tax credits as a single non working mum.
Can my Dad claim this for himself or should my sister or myself claim for him??? We are with him at least 8/10 hrs a day between us.He has mobility issues, and cannot climb stairs unaided. I know that CA can affect other benefits but who would be better off claiming or is it about the same ???
By better off I do not necessarily mean financially but less problematic with the benefits agency .

He can't claim carers allowance for himself. You can claim carers allowance if you care for him for at least 35 hours a week.

With your illness, (I mean the reason for ESA) would you be able to still care for your dad?

    Hi Indie Kid (female)!
Yes , the only thing I cannot do is lift , most of my other problems are mental health related. I can cook and clean for him ,wash and iron and as an ex nurse most personal care except manual handling ( my sister does this ). He needs supervision most of the time for safety reasons but his needs will change with the progress of Parkinsons.
  • If he gets severe disability premium he would lose that if someone claims carers allowance for him.

He only claims AA and nothing else.
