Old debt

Help!
I have received a letter from a debt collection company called Cabot finance - they say I owe £1227 for a Barclaycard I defaulted on in 1995! They say they took over the debt in 1999. I did query why it has taken them 15 years to contact me - they had no explanation for it. I don't recall ever having a Barclaycard.
I have checked my credit file and can find no evidence of this on there - but it doesn't appear to go back that far.
Does anyone know how I can find out if I do owe this money or how to get information from further back on my credit file ? or even if they can suddenly try to reclaim after this amount of time.

Thanks in advance
