Old debt

Help!
I have received a letter from a debt collection company called Cabot finance - they say I owe £1227 for a Barclaycard I defaulted on in 1995! They say they took over the debt in 1999. I did query why it has taken them 15 years to contact me - they had no explanation for it. I don't recall ever having a Barclaycard.
I have checked my credit file and can find no evidence of this on there - but it doesn't appear to go back that far.
Does anyone know how I can find out if I do owe this money or how to get information from further back on my credit file ? or even if they can suddenly try to reclaim after this amount of time.
Thanks in advance

If you had a debt and have not paid for 6 years (5 in Scotland) then the debt will be statute barred. They can still send you letters asking you to pay it but they cannot take legal action to get it back.
Just begging letters. Please pay us. etc..Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Credit reports only go back 6 years.
Keep an eye on it as some DCAs add new default entries to try and get you to pay. Complain if this happens.
It's statute barred, tell them it's not your debt and even if it was its SB so you wouldn't be paying anyhow.:beer:0 -
As happy-bunny suggests send them a letter like this - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=34906257&postcount=5

If you didn't have a Barclayard is it possible that its a case of mistaken identity? I know it has happened in the past, especially if you have a common surname.kicking squealing gucci little piggy.0
