I did my first Multi-Centre to Thailand with Travelbag this year. We went to Bangkok for 3 nights, Chiang Mai for 3 nights, & Cha Am for 8 nights. Bangkok's a must, & food's so cheap on the street & at Terminal 21! We rode elephants in Chaing Mai, & sat in a cage with tigers, I held snakes & scorpions  In Cha Am we stayed in log cabins in a jungle type atmosphere, but on the coast. It was so quiet but there was a taxi driver who we hired to take us to various places during the day. We went to Monkey Island, & Monkey Mountain where they roam freely. Whatever you do you'll have a fantastic trip!

We were first timers to Thailand in July 2013. Our route was similar to mvteng's and Duke's mentioned above:

Bangkok - 4 nights - flew Air Asia to:
Chiang Mai - 4 nights - took local bus to:
Chiang Rai - 2 nights - flew Air Asia and then hired a driver to take us from DMK airport to:
Hua Hin - 5 nights - hired a driver to take us back to:
    Bangkok - 1 night

Hua Hin was our rest and relaxation part of the holiday. From memory, we decided on here as it was one of the best places - in terms of the weather - for that time of year.

We had a guide and driver for 1 day in Bangkok; a guide/driver for 2 days in Chiang Mai and 1 1/2 days in Chiang Rai. We learnt so much from them and was money well spent. They added so much to our holiday. Would recommend you look in to doing this.

Thank you so much, I think I am going to try and stay out there 3 weeks even if the rest of the group cant afford to or take that long off work. It sounds amazing, I am so excited hearing everyone's experiences already.

The great thing about Thailand is that you don't need to book a package holiday or organised tour. Just get a return ticket to Bangkok and then just follow your nose. It's one of the easiest (and cheapest) countries in the world to travel around.
