  • You should try out the Ikea mattresses - they have a 90 day exchange policy.

Distance selling regs are there so you can inspect the goods as if on display in a shop. It doesn't mean you have the right to try them out before you buy, i.t your not meant to sleep on it then send it back.

Whilst I understand about the dirt issue, mattresses do come wrapped in plastic and moving plastic around does create static, which in turn is like a magnet to dirt!

I have just been searching for mattress advice before I choose a replacement and found this thread .......

Pinky you seem very knowledgable, could you advise me if this one would be a better option from dfs..
    Bronze 1500 Double Mattress
Product Code: DSB2921D, it will be easier if I buy from them as they are taking the silk mattress away.

I am getting most confused, one site I read said a softer mattress is more supportive. I have occasional lower back pain but mainly shoulder pain from a frozen shoulder?

    Many thanks

If you have specific needs from a mattress then why buy online? Surely it would be better to go to a store and try a few out rather than take (often subjective) advice from forums and the like.

    Absolutely agree with this.

You've already said you went round some shops. Some things are just better bought in stores rather than online.

The OP has already told us:

My apologies to OP, I didn't read the 1st post properly.

Sadly, there is no industry standard on tension, most companies will either say medium, medium firm or firm. As if you ever said that a mattress was soft you'd never sell any. We've all been brought up with (incorrectly) that a soft mattress is bad for you back. Even we try to say gentle support instead of "soft" for that very reason.

I have recommend this mattress on many occasions on this forum and also sold many myself, this is the 1st time that I've heard of any complaint on it.

I'm guessing the tension of the mattress combined with the dirt put them over the edge some what.

With any new mattress you have to give it at least 6-8 weeks for your body to get used to a new mattress. Especially if moving from an older unsupported mattress to one that offers correct support.

Old mattress deteriorate over time slowly so you don't really notice it too much. However when you get a new mattress the difference is instant.

    Sorry I missed this earlier.

Support and firmness in a mattress are 2 totally different things, firmness is just that, what tension the mattress feels.

Support comes into play when a mattress moulds around your natural body shape. Lie on the floor on your back and your bottom and shoulder blades "take" all the weight with the lower back not getting any support. Do the same on a pocket sprung mattress that allows your body to sink into it and your body will be supported better, with bottom and shoulder blades sinking in and lower back actually touching the mattress and being supported. This is why memory foam has become so popular as it does "give" around the body.

If a mattress is too hard it "pushes" back onto you in the wrong places, creating pressure points.

A heavy person will need a firmer mattress then a lighter person, but very few people need a mattress that's rock hard firm. It's all about finding the correct mattress for you. Which is why I always advise trying in store where possible.

    Hope that helps a little.

As to the 1500 count mattress, that should offer more support as there are more springs inside the mattress, more stuff as it were holding your body.

  • Thank you everyone, I have bought a firm mattress at a local sleep centre. The mattress I bought online is being collected at a cost of £50 and returned.

I paid £25 for weekend delivery so its cots me £75.00 in all. They have said they will test the mattress and refund the delivery / collection costs if faulty but have no expectation they will find fault with their own product.

    An expensive lesson learnt
