I should of added I got the warm white ones that are the traditional colour. I've seen the white about 6000 k white range with a blue hint almost, they seemed a bit harsh for my liking. The 60 LED GU10 I've got £10 each! Not cheap.

As per GSM posting the Megaman GU10 of 7 and 9w are pretty good. Warm isn't too bad for a CFL energy saving bulb and the light is good. Suitable where the extra length don't cause a problem. You can get another brand as well that are all white case's, I prefer megaman as all silver.
  • Just to add my 2p's worth guys to this thread. I've got a light bar in my kitchen which takes 6 X GU10 50W halogens. I replaced 2 of these with LED replacements and, I can comment on the following:-

    1) They're expensive to buy - got mine from B&Q for about £12 for a 2 pack. I've tried to get more but they never have stock! They will however last a very long time (in theory) and also cost less to run to offset this high initial cost. IIRC the old energy saving bulbs were a fortune when they first came out.

    2) The one's I have do indeed have a blue tinge to them - I can only describe the difference as somewhere like the difference between "normal" car headlamps and the new xenon type. It's quite a crisp blue tinge, and my wife and I quite like it now.

    3) The new lamps don't get hot!!! I can take them out and apply the lamp to my cheek after they've been on an hour, they are only slightly warm. The halogen type GU10's used to bake my head when preparing food, whereas LED lamps obviously gives off very, very little heat in comparison. This could be important if say like my dad he has GU10 reading lights next to his bedside but the heat given off is excessive.

    4) Maybe obvious to some, but worthy of a mention perhaps - you can't dim these.

Hope the above helps anyone - my advice give them a go, we could start a new trend. I noticed ledshoppe has started doing them also the other day.

    Neil.

You can get GU10 LED bulbs with 60 or 90 leds from a websites in the UK but they are very new. The 60 LED version is about 40w and the 90 LED 55-60w. LED lights aren't that far off but these have only appeared online for sale in the last couple of weeks. I've got a couple of 60 LEDs GU10 in as replacements for halogen and pretty impressed with them/

18 LED will be about 15watts'ish

NX3, Will you please let us know website address you bought them from and also if you had good experience with them, thanks.

only the 12 and 220v ones are appropriate
the cree based lights are currently the most efficient so the 3 led one above probably puts out more light than a 48 5mm led one. the 5mm leds tend to be very blue in their output as well

Energy saving bulbs are very frustrating as if I'm gonna spend a lot on them then I want to see how they perform first. Of course you very rarely get the chance to do that.
Surely you always get the chance - buy one and take it back if it doesn't meet your expectations.

Early days yet.... In theory these should only consume 1 watt per lamp, but it depends how they get 230 volts down to less than 2 volts to run each led.
A capacitor. This is virtually 100% efficient but leads to a very poor power factor. You won't pay for more than 2 watts or so, but in theory the reactive current messes up the electricity supply. In practice it won't make any difference because it is very small compared with all the other consumers of power.

Like others have said - don't expect these to replace your halogen bulbs. Consumer LEDs are probably a decade off being a viable alternative lightsource but I think they'll get there.
They're viable now. I have had 3W Luxeon LED lights in my hall for a year. The ones I got were 12V (MR16) but you can get mains ones (GU10) now. Don't expect them to perform in exactly the same way as the halogen lights they are physically compatible with, but if you plan for that, they are very usable. I got mine from https://www.initiallights.co.uk. Look at the website and you will see that the colour temperature issue ("cold" and "warm" white) is being addressed, too.

    3) The new lamps don't get hot!!!
It's always worth pointing out that the fact that they don't get hot is because they are efficient. The power you put into a lamp comes out as light and heat. The more efficient the lamp, the less heat it will give out for a given amount of light.

I got my 60 LED GU10 from StricklyLamps on ebay.

You'll find other UK based sellers and some from Hong Kong and France. I found the 60 LED to be about 40w with a nice soft round spread light. Some LED with just a few couple powered don't defuse that well and the light on the wall has a hard edge once of centre.

I've only had these a few weeks but so far so good. Some good info from gromituk, as he says they don't get hot which is a added bonus.

    Globe LED Bulbs

I've saw these on some news site but only place I've found them is on ebay.com with this seller. Click the link to see what kind of LED globe / ball with e.g 104 LEDs on it. Anyone know where to get them in the UK ? They look interesting but expensive for now. This seller has a choice of white and warm white but I've not bought any yet but tempted.

I don't know whether anyone managed to get these LED lamps. When I went to the shop yesterday evening , they had none in stock. Are these Lidl ones any good? I will get there early when they sell them again. Thank you.
