My springer loves eating horse poo and I did speak to my vet about it. He said it would do him no harm but that we had to keep up top date with worming etc.

Please be careful letting your dog eat horse poo - the wormers used are toxic to dogs and a friends dog died from this :(

My lurcher is a poo eater and in his case it's due to a gastric insufficiency and an inability to properly absorb nutrients from his food. We taught him a really good "leave it" and combined with a basket muzzle, we eventually improved the habit. It's not stopped completely and every now and again a particularly inviting poo does get eaten :D

As far as cat poo is concerned, it's still has a high protein content and so smells like meat to dogs.

This would worry me, because of the possible diseases and worms which could be in the poo of an uncared for animal.

I would use a muzzle (basket type as worn by greyhounds, which allowing panting and not the cloth ones meant for use at vets/groomers) as the slight loss of freedom is worth preventing the risk of illness. Hounds don't seem to mind them , even if they aren't accustomed to them through racing.
