My Android tablet had something like that for music, it royally wound me up because it took all my music and organised it into albums.... Only it got everything mixed up, artists with similar track titles all got bunched into the wrong albums, it created virtual folders that couldn't be undone. I had to download an app that simply lets you browse folders for your music.

I currently have 56,306 photos in my pictures directory totaling 198GB (i just checked, I don't know this offhand!) :D.

As I tend to want to show them to people when I am out and about I used my Dropbox account and saved a smaller version (1024 pixels on the longest side) into an identical directory structure in my Dropbox folder using an automated batch program which I refresh every few weeks.

I can then view any image from anywhere in the world where I have a reasonable internet connection (the small file size means that they load quickly even over half decent 3G) on devices including smartphones, tablets, Smart TV's and other peoples computers.

I can either browse to the directory if I know where it is, or alternatively, use the Dropbox Photos App to view them by their EXIF "date taken" stamp. I can then also share a single file or a whole folder with anyone I choose.

Plus, in the event that I have a catastrophic data loss, I still have a smaller copy of every single photo I have ever taken backed up safely on the cloud.:)

I second that. I store my photos in "daily" folders so I at least have the date they were taken. Then I use "Renamer", folder by folder, to rename files. I set it to replace "DSCF" (or whatever) with the date and location (as a minimum) and whack a folder at a time. I may need to do some manual renaming.

Then I drag each folder into iPhoto, which imports them (copies them to its own location on an external Hard Drive).

Inside iPhoto, I can add any additional "tags" required. With "face recognition" set up, the software does the rest.

Inside iPhoto, I keep everything ordered in folders suitably labelled for "Tenerife 1998" etc.

I keep at least TWO backup copies of everything, on TWO separate Hard drives.

A bonus is that, as with all Mac applications, iPhoto is integrated with the Operating System so it's a simple one or two click process to add a photo to an email, or to export it, enhance it, remove "red eye", change its size, etc.

I doubt this sort of simple integration is possible with Windows, although you might come close using something like Adobe "Lightroom". It's probably worth spending a few bob on something that's reliable and user-friendly. (iPhoto is supplied free with every Mac, I think.)

Absolutely. If the OP is considering purchasing a new machine for this purpose I would 100% push for Mac.

You can rate photos out of 5 stars, tag faces, it displays location where available, and where the camera recorded it will tell you the details of the camera you took it on. It will automatically sort your photos by 'event', allows for tagging and descriptions and with a very easy to use editing software (albeit relatively simple).
