Childs fractured wrist

Options
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could help.

My daughter (aged 11) fractured her wrist last Monday.

My issue is how to keep her occupied with activities within the summer holidays, cost effective of course.

Thank you x

  • Buy a waterproof cover n she can still do things like go in paddling pool, make cakes etc.

Trips to farm, cinema (ours do kids cheap showings every morning in hols)
  • You'd be surprised what a motivated 11 year old can get up to, once the initial discomfort has eased. Those waterproof covers are fantastic to anybody who remembers the original version - a bin liner and sticky tape.

She doesn't need protecting - the cast does that - she just needs encouragement to carry on like it wasn't there (better for healing in my experience, and it stops any tendencies to be a dying swan). The only things that might be necessary is helping at first with bra straps and the like, although a crop top style sports bra solves that in any case.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

  • Unfortunately she hasn't got the full cast on, the doc decided as she is comfortable in the splint (strap like cast) that was it, until 4 weeks time.

Maybe I'm being too protective, but can't see how it will protect her wrist like the cast would.

My two year old fractured her collar bone at school. Trying to explain to her we couldn't bounce on the trampoline and go swimming was hard. We did daft things like painting toe nails (mine looked fab lol), baking, making hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows and snuggling up for a film. Guess they would work for an 11 year old but the play doh and happy land toys may not :)

What about a home pamper day with face masks? We did watch far more tv than normal because that was the only time she would sit still.
  • Thank you for the suggestions, have brought rio 1 and 2 for them to watch. Also noticed some kids films on sky movies.
It's hard I agree as also have an 8 year old, so feel like I'm punishing both, I know I'm not.
Pamper days would be a fantastic idea, she's a tomboy!
She fractured her wrist by slipping at summer school playing with the lads.

Just before last year's summer holidays my son broke his wrist (on school monkey bars!!!) and had to have it pinned with a full plastercast.

For a couple of days all he did was moan (he's right handed and it was his right wrist) as he couldn't play his x-box but he soon got used to it and he thought nothing of it. Life then carried on as usual. He even got his skateboard out - I told him to put that back in the garage immediately!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Give her a few days and I bet she won't be too bothered. Good luck.

Could she manage loom banding? You can do this one handed, one hand/arm just steadies the board. Reading, going for walks to the park together, could she manage a very gentle go one the swings with one arm?

    Happy moneysaving all.

Hospitals are well used to kids that hurl themselves into everything they do - if they thought the splint wouldn't work at that sort of intensity, they'd have put a full cast on in the first place.

Unless they specifically said otherwise, I'd let her do whatever she wanted. Mind you, I spent last summer and autumn wearing an aircast on my leg due to screwing up my ankle (due to wallying around with the lads :)) and found out that it's possible to run, jump and dance slightly lopsidedly with one on.
