Canon G12 camera stuck with busy message and crossed out hand symbol

I have a canon G12 camera which has always worked fine. I was shooting a short video clip with it today and found I could not stop the recording or shut down the camera. It was stuck with a message saying busy and a hand with a line through it on the screen and a green light flashing next to the viewfinder.

Anyone know what this means?

Almost certainly a memory card issue - possibly caused by low battery. Remove batteries. Try a different [probably faster] memory card

Don't think it can be the memory card - Transcend 32mb used widely on hol in USA last year without a problem, never seen the message before. But batteries on the low side so will try recharging.
