Chick pea burgers are quick, easy & inexpensive too - just a finely-chopped onion fried until golden, mixed with a tin of drained, mashed chickpeas (from Lidls, much cheaper than any of the British supermarkets last time I checked) a teaspoon of Ras Hanout (Moroccan spice mix, easy to make up your own) & a beaten egg; add little flour or some breadcrumbs (from stale bread) if the mixture is too wet. Form into patties & fry gently until golden brown. Makes about 8, so will keep you going for several days, maybe with some salad or stir-fried veg.Angie - GC Jul 25: £225.85/£500 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0

Chick pea burgers sound nice.0

Have you ever made bread Zennith? A bag of bread flour from Lidl (about 89p) will make 3 decent sized loaves.
500g flour
1 teaspoon each of salt, dried yeast and sugar
300ml warm water.
Mix all the ingredients together and knead for about 10 minutes. Cover with cling film or damp teatowel and leave to rise until doubled in size.
Push your fist into it and give it another knead for a few minutes, then shape and place on a greased baking tray or 2lb loaf tin and bake at about 200c for about 30 minutes.
To check if it's done, knock it on the bottom, it should sound hollow.
When you take it out, stick on a cooling rack and cover with a tea towel. That will give you a nice crust.
Alternatively, your other flour can be used to make flatbreads or soda bread.0 -

Thankyou for the instructions.0 -
I fine this no kneed bread stupidly easy - mix/stir it all together, leave it overnight, throw it in the oven.

Zennith - One really easy recipe, all you need are a couple of potatoes, onion and baked beans.
Slice the potatoes into thin rounds (as if you were going to make crisps), slice the onion the same. Then put a layer of potatoes in an ovenproof dish, followed with a layer of onion, then a layer of beans.
Repeat this until your dish is full, ending with a potato layer, then bake in the oven for 30-40 mins.
It doesn't sound much but I was surprised at what a tasty meal it made. If you had cheese you could add some to the top.0 -
Is it plain flour you have? If not, Asda Smartprice or equivalent from other stores - 45p for 1.5kg. Smartprice natural yogurt 45p. Baking powder £1.09, salt.
Flatbreads:
500g plain flour
500ml yogurt
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 tablespoon salt (maybe a little less)
Mix all together and knead for a minute or two, cut into 12. Freeze 9 or 10. Roll rest out into a flat shapeand cook for a minute each side in a hot pan - preferably a griddle pan so you get stripes.
Total cost around 65p for 12. Really easy (as in REALLY easy!) and the yogurt give a little tang to it. You can experiment with adding garlic or a few spices but lovely as they are and would be great with lentil curry or chick pea dahl.A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

When I make flatbreads I just use flour, a pinch of salt and water. Add enough water to make a dough, roll into little balls then roll each ball out and cook in a dry frying pan, flipping it over like you would a pancake.0

Thankyou both.
I have everything except the yogurt for the first recipe.0
