Can I claim back my mispaid rent?

I apologise if this is the wrong section. I have no idea where to post this.
Until May, I lived in a student house and I thought I had paid my last rent installment in May, I asked when I handed in my keys and they said they would then cancel the direct debit, but then they messaged me saying I had to still pay for June which I considered fair as my contract was due to run out in June. So I paid it, still thinking they were going to cancel the direct debit. I have never had to cancel direct debits for my rent before, the letting agent has always cancelled so I thought it would be the same. However I have just checked my bank account as I had a to transfer the some money and discovered I had £400 less than I thought. I have checked through my statements (and had them go back to paper statements) and my letting agent has taken out two more rent installments. I haven't signed a lease or anything with them so I was surprised that this had happened. After talking with my mum, she told me that I should have cancelled it in May when I moved out.
Am I entitled to claim back this mispaid rent? I am currently unemployed and this was the last of my money so I currently have no money.

Why not simply contact the agent, explain what has happened and ask for the money to be returned? It is probably just a mistake?
Have you cancelled the direct debit now? Never leave it to the other party!0 -
I have contacted them and asked but I am just asking if I am entitled to it back. As I said I have never had this issue before. I haven't cancelled it yet, can't figure out how to do it online so it will have to wait until Monday.Money saved in 2018: £18.78 in jar, £250 added to savings. Total: £268.780

I assume you returned your keys to the letting agent? If so then they are aware that they are no longer renting to you. Ask for all monies taken since the end of May to be returned and for the interest you would have accrued on it to be given in compensation for their error, and see what they say.. They may come back and say they are entitled to rent for June under the lease agreement but anything beyond that is definitely their error (going on the information you have given)0
