Improving credit file for a mortgage app

Hello! My Oh and I are starting to save for our house deposit, I am currently paying off my car loan which will be finished before we go to apply. My oh has an adverse credit history with 4 defaulted accounts (2011) all settled (2013) although one shows as partially settled despite the company saying they'd mark it as satisfied,
He currently has a Barclays account and a Mobile contract and is paying for his insurance monthly too. His last years insurance did show on call credit but does not appear to be on his settled accounts since he finished paying for it in April.
Is there anything he can do to improve his file in the meantime? I think the defaults drop off in mid 2017 and we'd be looking to buy around2016. Would rather not go down the credit card route if possible? He is on the electoral roll and our finances are separate.
