Claiming Charges and Bank Account Closed

Hi there, I'm new to this website and just really need some help and advice!

I have banked with the Halifax for years and years and have just reclaimed my bank charges, totalling to around £450. On Thursday I got a letter saying they are not giving me the money and I agreed to their terms when I opened the account blah blah blah... and on Saturday I got a call saying my overdraft had lapsed and my account had been closed and I owed £877 (my overdraft was £1000, and has been for a long time).

I have recently gone from maternity leave to working part time, so my account was more often than not in the overdraft but always within the agreed £1000. My feeling is that they are closing my account due to me asking for my charges back. To be honest, this is fine as I understand it is up to them who they do business with but I'm worried as I also have a joint Halifax bank account - can they close this bank account also, even though I'm not claiming on it? and am I right in thinking that any loan deals I have with the Halifax won't be affected (as I have a loan with them too!!)

Oh, shall I continue chasing the charges as I have nothing to lose really if they have already closed my account (just my joint one I'm worried about!!!)

Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated!!
NicNora

They say you should open another account at another bank just in case they close your account, so i reckon you should do this first, but dont be put off by there 'NO' letter. I dont even have an account with Halifax anymore but I am still claiming back my charges with them and have just recieved a 'half way' offer of goodwill from them. I'm just trying to decide whether to take it further now, as my next step is court. Good luck. (ps, a new bank will do all the transferring of DirectDebits for you, so you don't have to do anything too stressful.
