Can a DCA Give You a Bad Credit Rating

Sounds a silly question I know but for the last few years my credit rating was perfect then suddenly in January it plummeted to really bad! Even though I have money in the bank no debts and haven't missed any payments (nothing really to pay) or borrowed money etc.
It seems in January a DCA lowhell decided to say I owe them about £130 so they are down on my credit file as a lender who I have defaulted with! From what I can gather they claim this was a default from an account with another company five years ago! My records show this account ran its full two years and all 24 payments were made!
I have tried to argue it never defaulted but it seems the only way I can get my record cleaned is to pay up. Now I know it's not much to pay but if I just pay to clear it what's to stop them or someone else making up a similar claim in the future?

I had a similar situation with Lowell very recently...

Contact them.. tell them you dispute that you owe it them and you require proof that you owe them the debt... I.E statements from the company that sold them the debt etc.

Also paying the debt will not make the default disappear from your file.

They tried to say I owed them £21... so they will chase very little amounts

Paying it will not do much for your credit rating, as the default that does 95% of the harm will remain. It will just be a satisfied default.

You need to continue to dispute this with Lowell as hard as you can and not give in. tell them that you will take them to the ICO and ombudsman if required, and you will go after them for compensation.

The other point is if this default is 5 years old then it will only stay and affect your credit report for 1 more year anyway, paid or not, no matter what you do.

  • Oh! The default first showed on my credit record Jan this year but allegedly it the default happened at the end of 2012 and was for a totally different amount (a lot less). I am going to write to them asking for a copy of the signed CCA which I know can't exist.

The CCA is not relevant here.

You need to tell them you don't owe the money and to prove you do it remove the default. Asking for the CCA sounds like you are avoiding one if your debts to them.

  • Oh I was sort of going with bloodmat89's suggestion with the cca idea

As I wanted them to supply paperwork to show this alleged account in default as I have no real details apart from whats on my credit report which shows part of an account number and a far lower default figure.
It seems odd to me that to contact the company by post that I have to write to a PO box! So to be honest I have done nothing about and haven't heard from them, it is still on my credit file
