AVG 2014 (free edition) strange message

I've used AVG (free edition) for sometime. Recently, I noticed on my laptop when I opened AVG, a message appeared in the Firewall box. Most of the time it says Activate - but on opening a message flashes up in that box which is always too quick for me to record accurately, but is essentials says $%(( computer
I've uninstalled it on my laptop, and replaced it with MS Security Essentials, but noticed the same thing started to appear on my Aspire notebook.
I've not detected any virus on either and keep all software up-to-date.

Any ideas welcomed.

%COMPUTERNAME% is a system reference that returns the name of the computer.

No idea why something like that would appear in a popup though.
