Well, you do need to get paid somehow...fairy_lights wrote: »I've never been asked to show an employer my bank card, that sounds pretty dodgy to me
And now they are refusing to pay him...what sort of company is it? Are you sure it's not some sort of scam?
They probably just asked for his bank details, which can be a quick look at a card as an alternative to bringing in a statement. It's not like they're going into a back room and cloning it.0 -
The bank card would be for proof of bank details.
Was the birth certificate a full one? as you are not allowed to accept the short version.whoever said laughter was the best medicine has clearly never tasted wine

My partner has had similar problems in the past - he doesn't have either a driving licence or a passport. And because his mother divorced and re-married when he was young, the surname on his birth certificate is not the one he goes by. As he wasn't formally adopted by his stepfather, but uses stepdad's surname on job applications as he considers it his own surname and wants nothing to do with the biological father he never met, it has caused problems as he can't PROVE that the surname he uses is his proper surname because of the original surname on his birth certificate.
I've told him to apply for a provisional photocard driving licence, but I can't remember what ID is needed to get one of those - he could just end up with the same problem!0 -

He should change his name by deed poll (he can do this on-line for a few pounds) and then he can send the deed poll in with the other documentation when he applies for his driving licence.0 -

The company should have checked that your son has a legal right to work in the UK before he started work. As it stands, they don't seem to understand that having photo ID isn't a legal requirement, but that he can provide other documents as already stayed. Maybe they also fail to realise that they cannot refuse to pay for work done. I take it that your son isn't in a union?0

He is fed up,they have told him to go to the library near where he works, and join to get a photo ID!!!!He will be handing in his notice, very unprofessional. Thanks for all the replies.I have sent them an e-mail quoting the government web site.
Why cant he just do this, if it is all it takes. Its free......
Seems a bit silly not to if he is going to cut his nose off to spite his face and leave a job.....make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
He should think hard about resigning over this. His next employer will want to know why he left. Explaining it was to save having to join the library will not look good !
He won't be able to sign on either as he would have made himself unemployed.
If he doesn't want to work there he should go along with the library card thing (though how on earth that would prove his right to work in the UK I don't know) then apply for other jobs, and stick it out until he gets one.0 -
Photo ID is the bane of everyones life what if you dont have it? Somehow think the national identity scheme is still a good idea, even banks now wont accept anything without photo ID. It wont be long before a dna sample will be required to prove identity.0
