Cheap last minute flight to anywhere (from Canada)

Hi!

I'm an ex-pat living in Winnipeg, Canada, and have always enjoyed this forum.

I've been checking out the flight booking tools on the site, (which are all pretty Euro-centric, unfortunately) and was wondering if anyone knew of a 'cheap flights to anywhere' detector for North America.

I know Martin says that you should always book 60 days in advance as they rinse last-minute travelers - which totally makes sense if you know where and when you're going - but I just want a cheap break for a long-ish weekend (leave Fri, come back Mon or Tues).

I figure that all the last-minute flights can't be stupidly expensive, but everything I've looked at is coming up over $1,000. Are standby flights still cheap, or do they screw you over for those now too?

It's nothing too important - would just like to get out of here for a couple of days, preferably to somewhere I've never been before... Any help greatly appreciated! :)

I do not think any airline does standby fares now, the only possibility of cheap flights would be on charters or lastminute holiday offers.

Skyscanner is not Euro centric, so have a go with that.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.

Use Skyscanner, put in 'Winnipeg' as your from airport and select 'Everywhere' in the to field and see what you get.

How much Neil Young memorabilia is there in Winnipeg?

Winnipeg, why not just climb on the back of one of the huge 'skeeters?

I live in northern Alberta and use expedia.

Flights are expensive in North America.

But you can get cheap getaways to Vegas for under $600 for the weekend as long as you aren't hung up on hotels.

Marlin Travel and the Flight Centre in the malls all have lists of last minute packages and flights. Look at the Signature website they mark down Mexico, Cuba, etc, on a regular basis.

Why do you insist on calling yourself "an ex-pat". You state in other threads that you have Canadian Citizenship, so you've been here at least four years. Or do you just hang out in English theme pubs reading the International Express drinking Boddington's and claiming to miss "home".

I've been in Canada nearly 50 years and would never claim to be an ex-pat.

    Do you like Neil Young?

I'd rather poke my eyes out with a fork.

On behalf of my people, I apologize for Justin Beaver, Chilliwack, Anne Murray, Shania Twain, Shannon Tweed, etc.

Neil Young is the best and coolest musician ever. No one even comes close.

You should read this thread here, I think you would like it.

I have dual citizenship (born British and naturalized Canadian). I've been living in Canada for about 10 years now and consider it my home. I'm married to a born Canadian and our Son is also a dual national.

I don't miss an awful lot about the UK to be honest, (mostly just my family, my mates and the pubs), and doubt I'll live over there again. It's nice to go back for a visit, but I don't have any kind of yearning to move back there.

That said, I'm not ashamed of where I was born, and I'm not going to do something daft like try to affect a Canadian accent. I've picked up some inflections and I use the local terminology (wrench, hood and trunk, flashlight, etc) as that's what things are called here.

I vote, I live here and work here and consider myself Canadian, but it doesn't make me 'not British any more' and I'm not going to try and divest myself of the first twenty-odd years of my life out of some misguided sense of jingoism for my new home.

If you can think of some other 'tag' for my circumstances that you don't find offensive and doesn't require a sentence or two to express, I'd be happy to hear it.

By the way - we keep trying to claim Neil Young as he went to high school here, but I think he's from somewhere in Ontario originally.

There's far more local obsession with 'The Guess Who' as they really are local. We have buildings named after Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings.

Ex-pats suck the life out of economies. Just admit you are an immigrant.

It's how this country got to be such a mess, everyone wants to be special and a hyphenated-Canadian
  • Anyone from Canada who doesn't like Neil Young can't be a real Canadadian!
