Moorcroft threaten legal action for British gas payment I am not responsible for.
It would be great to receive some advice.
My husband recently received a letter from Moorcraft Debt recovery regarding a British Gas account payment
with no account or address mentioned therein.
We contacted them to enquire the details of account no./period etc. as we have never had a British Gas account.
They then mentioned an old address that we used to rent in 2011. They admitted that they were contacting us on the basis of an address/name search(credit Check agency records)
and had no records regarding the British Gas account being mentioned.
We informed them that the landlord was responsible for all utility bill payments during our stay there.
Requesting them to contact either the registered homeowner or estate agents(sent them details of the estate agents that we dealt with - this being a managed property).
They want my husband to send a copy of rental agreement as proof or else they would proceed with legal action.
Now, we can't find the rental contract, will keep looking for it - in the meanwhile :
What are our options to deal with this.
Will this affect my husbands credit ratings in any way?
Are Moorcroft right in reaching out to us the way they did without any proof/account details just on the basis of some address search info.
Thanks.

They've done nothing unlawful in using a credit reference agency, asking you to pay a debt they believe you owe etc. Could it affect your credit rating? Possibly - if the debt is shown under your name. Could they make a Court Claim? Yes if they want to.
That said, you don't have to prove anything if they do go to the Courts - they have to prove the claim. You are quite entitled to ask for proof of details of the agreement / debt. If they can't provide them they wont win any court claim.0
