First time reclaiming PPI

Hi all
My dad has over the years taken out finance on various things, has had credit cards and so on. He is wanting to reclaim potential PPI on these things and I'm just looking for some advice for him.
I'm aware there is a lot of information regarding this on here but for the time being we are just looking for some advice on the absolute basics and what the first things we should be doing are. Any advice would be very much appreciated while it would be helpful if anyone could post links to the most important things on here we need to read/look into.
Thanks in advance

This link from the MSE site is a great resource.
Do not be tempted to use a Claims Company - you will still do all the work but they will just post off your form and then claim about 40% of any refundSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
