We spoke to our vet and he said we could use the side door, which led straight into the consulting rooms. It went right past the scales, so he just used to jump on them and wait to be measured ! lol. Afterwards we would go out the side door again.

Vets will try and accommodate you as much as they can. The other alternative is to leave him in your car, until you are called and then rush him through. We also did that a few times.

    Great ideas thank you!

I wait outside with my vets (pop my head into reception to announce my arrival) and the vet comes out to meet me. They let me know if the coast is clear to go through reception, or let me go through a side door if not.

I've had some nightmare experiences before - like the vets who went ahead to check the waiting room, told me it was all clear, only for me to walk to the front desk to pay to find several customers in chairs with dogs sat on their laps holding handbags infront of the dogs' faces! They weren't fooling me, let alone my fear-reactive dogs who have a much better sense of smell! I ended up having to leave mine with a few nurses around the corner while I paid as quickly as I could, before skulking out of the side door they suddenly remembered they had!
