Married name on passport

I renewed my passport in Jan as we were going to Florida, just before we went we decided to get married while we were there, now I need to change my passport to my married name and it seems I have to pay out for a brand new 1 even though it's only 6 month's old. I can't not have it changed as it's the only form of id I have due to a medical condition which means I can't drive. Has anyone else had to do this and not get charged?

I spoke to the passport office when renewing my passport, as I'm renewing it to go to Vegas, where we're going to get married. Essentially, they said that I'd have to pay twice, no way around it.

In my case, I also asked if I could leave it in my maiden name and use that for the next 10 years and they said it's fine but I can see that's not the case for you. So I think you'd just have to pay again, I'm afraid.

The only way round it is not to change the name. As you've ruled this out (not sure your reason holds good - just make sure that where it matters bookings are in your maiden name) then you have to pay for a new one

I have epilepsy and like I say it's my only form of proper id, it's just annoying really because it's only 6 month's old, I could understand maybe if its a few yrs old but as it's practically new it's crappy

What do you actually need photo ID for, other than travelling?

You may be able to use a combination of passport and marriage certificate?

No way of avoiding the fee. Most people just live with it and just have to remember to book travel in their maiden name.

We have even more fun as my wife has two passports, her british one is in her married name but her non-british one doesnt recognise name changes in the same way so is still in her maiden name.

Turkey appears to be the only place in the world I;ve found where she'd have an easier time on her non-british passport so its not that much of an issue for us. She has to enter her home country on their passport as a legal requirement but they dont care the name doesnt match the ticket etc so I guess they are used to it.

Some jobs require photo id, bank accounts, to change my PayPal to my new name I need photo id, so its more things than what you think. Like I say I'm just going to pay it but it's still rubbish

Banks dont require photoID, or at least none I know do.

Choosing Natwest randomly they say they accept the below as an alternative to driving license or passport http://personal.natwest.com/personal/current-accounts/ID-required-branch.html :

    Letters from HMRC for:
    Notification – Coding or Demand
    Disabled Persons Tax Credit
    National Insurance Contributions Account Statement

    Letters from benefits agency for:
    Child Benefit
    Working/Child Tax Credit
    Pension
    Disability
    Income Support
    Incapacity Benefit

As to jobs, the government confirms that having different names can be accepted as long as a further document to explain the name difference and give marriage certificate as the example. See https://www.gov.uk/check-job-applicant-right-to-work

My passport is still in my maiden name and I can still use it as a form of ID, I just provide my married certificate too.

As others have said when going abroad I just have to remember to book tickets etc in my maiden name. I have another 3 years left on it and don't intend to waste it!

I also use a passport/marriage cert combo whenever required (travel, picking up parcels at the post office...), as my passport still had 5 years left to run when I got married and I'm too cheap to change it :money:

I'm toying, though, with the idea of adding my maiden name as a middle name when I get my passport changed....

Middle name or double barreling your surname? Did you do the same with your bank accounts and other official documents?
