Kia Sportage

To identify 4wd versions, Kia add a 'KX' to the model number i.e.
a '2' or a 'KX-2', '3' or 'KX-3' whereas the KX equates to AWD (All Wheel Drive - their terminology for 4WD).

But, I keep seeing trade adverts saying a '2' or a '3' and stating 4 x 4….. Surely 4 x 4 is not the same as 4WD or as Kia state AWD?

Does 4 x 4 mean something different - what am I missing?

Comments

  • 4 x 4 stands for 4 wheels all driven, or if you prefer 2 axles both driven), doesn't matter if the drive to those wheels is auto as and when required or selectable.

4 x 2 is a standard 2 wheel drive 4 wheeled vehicle (most cars), 6 x 4 (and 8 x 4) normally applying to tipper type lorries with 3 (4) axles 2 of which are driven, 8 x 4 being usually military spec with 4 axles (8 wheels) all driven etc.

Kia's trim levels are numbered 1,2,3,4.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

The sight of a jaunty red Kia Sportage reminded me of the main difference between that vehicle and a sheep (it's marginally less embarrassing to be seen getting out of the back of a sheep) - Victor Lewis-Smith, Evening Standard, 24 Jan 2013

But then in fairness this guy is a prat
  • Don't know about the new ones, but the original quite small Sportage was a cracking little motor.

Wrong badge for the likes of Victor Double Barrel.

It means the dealers/sellers don't know what they are talking about or worse if they do, are trying to pull the wool over naive punters who will be a bit disappointed when it snows and it doesn't do its thing.

I had the same problem a few years ago when I was trying to find a 4 wheel drive Qashqai+2, they was endlessly listed in Autotrader as a Qashqai 4 wheel drive when the one they had was not. I got used to zooming into the interior pictures and looking for the big 4 wheel drive knob in the centre console. 8 times out of 10 it wasn't there despite the description meaning it was actually only 2 wheel drive.

In fairness some vehicle its hard to tell, for example all previous model diesel Honda CR-V's were 4 wheel drive but there was no control or indicator to show it was fitted or working, new models can be either.
