Advice on setting timer please

  • If your meter is of the cubic feet variety I suspect it must be quite old. I suspect that new ones have been counting cubic metres for some time. Wiser heads may be along soon to put me right on this.

If you actually have used 456 cubic feet in 8 months I would hazard a guess that the meter started from zero a year or so before you joined nPower. Either that or it cycled round to zero. Does it have a label showing the installation date?

  • Bigphil, I'll take your advice on the timing, and thanks for describing what you do. Re the radiators, I have them all on, but they're on 1 in the central areas of the house, and 'snowflake' in the bedrooms.

F&NC - the meter dates from 1984; has the date bottom right. Do you think this could be causing a problem?

Thanks to everyone for replying to my problem :-)

Not an expert but 30 years sounds pretty ancient for a meter. Almost certain that it has reached 99999 and then gone back to 00000 sometime in the last couple of years. Don't know for sure if that triggered a problem but worth considering.

I live outside UK for 10 months of year, but have to keep some heating on in the 3-bedroom, detached house.

I have had gas central heating on only over the coldest months for 3 times a day for 2 hours each time, only when the temperature has got down below 10 degrees. Despite this, my gas bill has come to around £650 for the period, with my meter reading going from 532 to 1005 over the period from beginning December (when I joined Npower) to end of July.

Could anyone advise me please on what to do to help lower the cost? Should I have it on less often, should I have it on for a shorter time, should I have the thermostat set lower? I would appreciate some help.

    Many thanks.

    Thanks for your post Flyingdragon,

I would maybe reduce the amount of time your heating is coming on, maybe once in the morning and once in the evening.

The fact your thermostat is set at 10c should mean minimal usage. You will pay a standing charge which may contribute to the majority of your balance.

If you could email us using the email address from our profile page. I'll be happy to review your account to ensure it is billed correctly and not estimated.
