Moving into Management - Any tips on keeping sanity

Options
All – have just found out through the grapevine that I’m in line for a client services manager role. (Work for global IT firm) When I heard it I nearly dropped, I’m soo nervous that I’m not up to the job or even that I want the pressure of being a manager. Has anyone been in this situation before.

cheers

    Just remember:

    - more is better than less
    - sooner is better than later
    - No is a good word. Practice saying it a lot

Actually, the higher you get, the easier it is because you have other people to do the work for you. And they are paid to do the work for you!

Talk to your HR people about what training and support you'd get. The only time I've regretted a promotion was when I was very young. I got no support, and was managing a team of much older women. Nightmare!

Why do you think that you are not up to the job?
If you are in a well run company your bosses will have taken note of your work, and so have confidence in you.

Have you not put yourself forward in the past? Because you don't have faith in yourself? You are worried about the responsibility? Your workload would be too much? ARe you 'betraying' your current colleagues by going up the ladder; will you lose your friends? Do you think management are smarter, more academic, a different 'set' from you?

WHat is it that you are frightened of, really? ARe you frightened of not coping, emotionally, professionally? Are you worried that other people will see you fail? Are you unwilling to try something - anything - in your life: you know what you can do, so that's what you do, everything else is beyond you in every sense of the term? What are you like outside work: do you try new experiences, or not?

Your HR department will be able to help with many aspects of your job - helping with career progression, how to be an effective manager
, the transition form one job to another. They may also be able to help if your problems with self-confidence and self-belief are deeper.

First of all, depsite all the jelly knees:T:T:T:T:T:T earning a promotion, or even being considered for one's not to be sneezed at, so well done:T:T:T:T

Also be aware of the change from 'colleague' to 'manager'. That was the hardest thing for me work wise. I've found it's easier coming in as a manager, but it was very difficult trying to manage / challenging former same grade/level workmates.

It was worth it, but I'd take it slowly and do as much reading / boning up on the area and team.

    All the best :)
